Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)

Cézanne belongs to the generation of the impressionists but its style is of great importance in history of art because this one is very personal and it contains in germ the bases of principal running of the beginning of the XXe century.

Without Cézanne it would be impossible to include/understand the evolution which led to the Cubism and Fauvisme. Cézanne takes again the conquests of impressionism, the light key, the explanation of the pallet, the vibrating colors but at the end of its evolution its fabrics are only made up of "form-colors". The deer and the cubists will take again these assets and will manage to release themselves even more of the subject.

In 1861 Cézanne meets Pissarro with the academy Suisse, this one introduces various artists of any tendencies to him. In the Louvre Cézanne studies works of Rubens, Poussin and of Delacroix. It is interested especially in the collorism. The freedom of invoice of Delacroix will be at the origin of the modulated color of its future works. The traditional rigour of the compositions of Chick will help Cézanne to build works where volumes are reduced to elementary forms. From 1870 the influence of Billhook shows through in some dark works. When it paints its first dead natures the expressive contents of the object represented yield the place to the problem of pure painting and its technique. In general the broad outline of the composition is traced with the pencil then the color is applied in fine layers which let show through the white of paper creating a particular vibration and explains the "unfinished" aspect of some of its tables.

Although being subject to the influence of the impressionists Cézanne keeps for principle of the rigorous compositions and the very marked forms. The work of Cézanne remains largely been unaware of during most of its life. Working in an almost complete insulation, it was wary of criticisms and the exposures. Its family understood neither his behavior or the revolutionary range of his art.
