Jesus and Nicodeme. Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848 - 1933).Stained glass.

In the Gospel according to St Jean 3,1-8, Nicodeme, a pharisee, comes to find Jesus in middle of the night. The pharisees are pious Jews, rigorous and attached to the Law. Nicodeme is a scientist and notable who raise questions with Christ: “ How a man could reappear if it is old? ”. “ Can one return in the center of his mother to be born one second time? ” Jesus answers him: “ What was born from the flesh is only flesh; what was born from the Spirit is spirit. Would not be astonished if I said to you that it is necessary for you to reappear. The wind blows where he wants : you hear the noise which it makes, but you do not know from where it comes nor where it goes. It is thus of any man who was born from the breath of the Spirit ”.
Nicodème comes night because it fears to be seen with Jesus, after the crucifixion it will leave at the great day to collect the body of Jesus and to embalm him with myrrh. (Gospel according to Jean saint, 19,39). He is question of spirit between Jesus and Nicodème and blue is the color of the spirit it is blue and its multiple alternatives which dominates in this stained glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Light blue of the sky to the multiple purple reflections of the capes, Tiffany varies the colors and their depth. It superimposes several layers of glass, up to 5. it uses metal salts during the cooking of glass and it practices inclusions of coloured glass. The richness of the nuances the blue ones in this stained glass is surprising. These blue contrasts with the light of the lamp but the harmony between the cold colors is really remarkable.

The horizon is visible with the back and the point of view of the spectator is at the level of the glance between the 2 characters.

Christ and Nicodeme are positioned on the vertical fields tension left and right exactly on the 4 natural points of interest of the stained glass.

Between the top and the bottom of the stained glass there is a range of the blue ones which varies from a turquoise blue very clearly, symbol of the spirit, with the deep crimson symbol of divine while passing by the purple one.

The stained glass is built on the large downward diagonal from left to right. The glance and the arm of Jesus give enough indications.

Details :

With the white back a shrub is whose colors, under this sky of night, are the variations of different tons the blue ones of which turquoise blue.

The light of the lamp which Nicomede carries diffuses in the neighborhoods and emphasizes the hot colors.

The colors with the bottom of the dress of Nicodeme are so luminous that it seems avoided invaluable stones, ruby, emeralds, sapphires.

Light : The lamp of Nicodeme is the first source of light, it lights especially Christ. The second source of light is the sky even if it is about a night scene. It lights the 2 characters.
