Kani Alavi. It happened in November. 1996. Fresco. Street Art. 10m X 4,50m. On line : october 7. 2016.

It happened on November 9th, 1989, the wall which separates Berlin opens…

For more than 30 years this wall has divided the families, the friends and the loves. It was built in the night of August 13rd, 1961, at the border of East Berlin and West Berlin on order of the government of Erich Honecker to put an end to an exodus Western East which weakens the GDR of the time. What expresses the fresco clearly it is that this wall yielded under a human pressure. All the high part of the composition is blue, similar to the sea contained by a dam. The flood of the people is pulled by the current generated by the aspiration of the central opening. Out, symbolically, the sea it is the life, it is an immense vital force because the life on earth started at the bottom of the oceans.
In psychoanalysis there is habit to say that water is before a whole symbol of the unconscious one; just like that, it takes its source in the darkness. It spouts out center of the ground or dissimulated rock. Like unconscious energy, it crosses the landscapes of the heart by the small ones or great rivers; become ocean it extends ad infinitum. But there is also a relationship with the top, because it goes down from the sky. For the simple one and primitive human understanding, it is the great event which brings a celestial element in the form of fertilizing rain. In this report of sky and transparency, water is also an expression of the spirit. This is why the man regenerates himself in it. This cement wall 47 km height and 4 m length did not yield itself, it yielded because the people and the individuals aspire to freedom. Its fall is the victory of the individual freedom of the people over the madness and the greed of the absurd policies of the men. Water is also psychoanalyse a strong symbol of unconscious itself of it. Thus if Kani Alavi represents this crowd as a great flood of people made up at the water beginning it refers to the unconscious collective of the German people. Even separate lasting more than 30 years the unconscious collective of the German people keeps common references, a common culture, history and values from which the past extends over at least 10 centuries, since the disintegration of the Carolingian empire. It is necessary more than one wall so that the individuals forget. And especially it always was the aware in Germany there to be linked, specific people and doing only one since Bismarck organizes, without Austria, the Confederation of Germany of North, coming into effect on July 1st, 1867. This wall was often baptized the wall of shame, because it is the symbol which the personal lives have no value when the power greed, plays of and the drawings political decide in the place individual will populations. Born in Iran in 1955, Kani Alavi is a German Iranian artist. In 1979 it obtains a scientific baccalaureat and is established in Berlin. He studies at the school of higher education of arts at Klaus Fußmann. In 1986 he studies the visual communication at the school of higher education of arts of Ludwig Thürmer. In 1990 it starts to carry out frescos on the walls of the Berlin Wall and in 1996 it becomes initiating artistic project of East Side Gallery in Berlin. In 2002 it carries out frescos for the garden of sculpture of United Nations in New York. In 2011 Kani Alavi receives the medal about the merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to have taken part in the rebuilding of the largest gallery into full with air of the world : the East Side Gallery. Its works are exposed in the largest German galleries, in particular in Berlin.

The point of view of the spectator is at the center of the fresco, in the middle of crowd.
Work has a direction of reading. From top to bottom and from left to right. The glance follows this flow of water in top then people in bottom.

Framing is traditional. The 4 natural points of interest are at the level of the people. The artist insists thus on the human dimension and humanistic of his work.

Blue occupies more than one third of pictorial space. In top it symbolizes water or the ocean. Then when it becomes apparent that the flood consists of human beings, other colors emerge. (green, red, pink).

The fresco is built on the large downward diagonal. In top as in bottom a great majority of the guiding lines go in this direction.

Details :

To the top the faces let appear much emotion. The oval shape of unquestionable mouths evokes the Cry of Evard Munch. (1893).

On the left one perceives the sea or the forming ocean of the waves. Symbolically one can interpret this representation like the unconscious collective of the German people.

With the bottom of the fresco, once the wall passed, certain faces are much alleviated.

Light : The light seems to come from the top. In addition to the white parts of the wall, beams of light emerge on the level of spaces where the faces with the hot colours dominate, red and pink.

Colour: Contrast between cold and hot colours.
