Richard Parkes Bonington. (1802-1828). Venice, Grand Canal. (1826).

Romantic painter, Richard Bonington is regarded as one of the precursors of impressionism. It’s British family settles in Calais, in France, Bonington go at the School of the fine arts of Paris in 1820. It takes lessons deprived with Antoine- Jean Gros and become friend with Eugene Delacroix and Theodore Gericault. He paints landscapes with oil as well as watercolours and these are the last which are worth much notoriety to him and the admiration of Delacroix. It passes most of its life to France and is one of the first painters to adopt the technique of the British landscape designers of the time such as John Constable or William Turner. Bonington dies too early (26 years), carried by tuberculosis before its style cannot reach truly its maturity. One feels at his place a great dexterity, much of precision, spontaneousness and lightness in the execution. With Turner and Constable he invents the technique which consists of rapids sketches carried out according to nature. Its paintings much will influence the school of Barbizon and Camille Corot.

The horizon is located in the distance, the eye seeks instinct the limits of the image then it returns on the flooded frontages of lights of the buildings of right-hand side which are located on its point of view. 

The 4 natural points of interest are used. The left lower point constitutes the base of the buildings and the boats. The 3 other points delimit an immense sky. 

The sky occupies the 2 thirds of pictorial space, the frontages another third, water the last third.

Work is built on the ascending diagonal from left to right which represents the light of the sunset. However a great majority of the guiding lines are horizontal or verticals.

Details : 

These sailors discharge their cargo even if they obstruct another boat coming from their left. 

The masts of the ships merge with the chimneys of the buildings and the arrows of the buildings of the city.

Realistic detail, of cloths hang with the windows to dry in the light of the setting sun.

Light : 

Lighting comes from in top on the right. The light of a setting sun.

Color : Contrasts between hot and cold colors and complementary colors.
